Paleo Dessert For Your Air Land Travel Adventure

Now let’s try to have  something to complement  your main meal for the journey. To match  with the Shredded Chicken with Pumpkin Seeds & Bacon recipe,  we will be having  awesome sweets to prepare and pack for a long haul flight, train journey or road trip.

This Walnut and Sesame Slice recipe is a favorite of many of the Paleo Cookbook owners out there, and now  I am giving you this exclusive recipe to help you stay paleo on your travels.

This recipe will complement the protein-rich Shredded Chicken meal perfectly because it requires little room in your travel bag and will allow for an easy feed to keep your energy levels high.

Again, the recipe doesn't take long at all to prepare, but you will need a few hours to cool the slices in the fridge for optimum taste and cutting; hence you need to prepare this  the day before you travel.

Here is  the full recipe, including ingredients, preparation and cooking instructions.

Walnut Sesame Slice

Makes 6-8

What you need:
1 cup walnuts, roughly chopped
½ cup sesame seeds
½ cup sultanas
2 tsp honey
2 tbs coconut oil

How to Prepare:

  1. Preheat a fan-forced oven to 180° Celsius/350° Fahrenheit.
  2. Place the walnuts on a baking tray lined with baking paper and bake in the oven for 3 minutes.
  3. Place the sesame seeds and sultanas on the baking tray away from the walnuts and return to the oven for a further 3-4 minutes, or until the sesame seeds and walnuts are lightly toasted.
  4. Place the walnuts, honey and coconut oil into the bowl of a food processor and blend until smooth (add more coconut oil if the mixture is dry at this point).
  5. Put the walnut mixture into a bowl along with the sesame seeds and sultanas and combine well.
  6. Line another baking tray with baking paper. Press the mixture firmly into the tray lined with baking paper to prevent sticking.
  7. Cool in a refrigerator for a few hours. When cooled, remove from the tray and cut into bar shapes.
  8. Packed this on a Tupperware or use a ziploc and sealed it tightly.

UNCONTROLLED SUGAR AND TRANSFAT CONSUMPTION INCREASES HUMAN DEPRESSION

Your mental state and your food-intake are likely best of friends and from what we consume in our daily  lives reflects the outcome of what our behavior will become tomorrow whether we like it or not. So, if you want to become what you most likely would want to be in the future, you better watch out your diet or else it's less likely you're going to have your dream life come true.

A research study was conducted in the University of Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain about the relation of sugar and trans-fat consumption on human behavioral pattern. The researchers studied a group of almost 9,000 people for between 2-6 years as a part of a long-term, ongoing study. Excluded from the study were people with extremely high or low daily caloric intake, or had obesity-related diseases.

Participants were asked to report how frequently they eat a given list of foods ie. fastfoods (trans-fats) such as  hamburgers, sausages and pizza; and sweet goods such as muffins, doughnuts and croissant.

At the beginning of the study, no one had been diagnosed with depression, or have taken antidepressants. However, by the end of the study almost 500 had been diagnosed with depression or have antidepressants in their system.

The new study showed that, consumers of fast food and sweets, compared with those who eat little or none, were 51 percent more likely to develop depression. The researchers saw that as depression levels increased, so did the amount of junk food eaten. The more depressed you are the more likely you are to consume large amounts of junk food. The correlation could also go the other way -the more fast food was consumed, the greater the risk of depression.

Usually people who eat high levels of  trans-fat junk foods have personalities of being single or unattached, less active and have a poor dietary habits ie. consumes less fruits and vegetables and healthy fats like nuts, fish and olive oil. Heavy cigarette-smokers and workaholics (spending more than 45 hours of week work) are likewise manifesting to have a depressed way of living.

It's better to follow a controlled dietary plan than having nothing along the way. Balanced diet and proper exercise are always recommended by experts but for those regular people who are beginning to adapt a new way of healthy living, the paleo diet plan is recommendable by doctors, dieticians and even athletes and cross-fit trainers.

Children are naturally full of energy, so making sure they have a healthy diet is the most important thing in their lives. Having access to simple healthy recipes for your kids is a must for any family household. Teaching your kids to eat healthy from the very beginning will condition them to continue healthy eating into adulthood.

We all know that kids only want to eat sweets and chocolate, well by learning healthy recipes like smoothies and shakes, you can get them to eat the fresh fruit they need. You can even sneak the odd vegetable in there and they will be none the wiser. Giving them a cool name like "Hulk Juice" or the like will get them more interested in a healthy diet.

Finding a balance between getting your child to eat what they need and letting them eat what they want, is difficult. By rewarding them with a treat for...lets say...creating the best picture on their plate out of vegetables, or maybe let them have that burger every now and then, so long as they drink a fresh fruit smoothie with it. By allowing the bad stuff in moderation, you will get your children to accept healthy eating more easily.

Don't keep junk food or other quick fix unhealthy food around the house. To help your children eat a healthier diet, you must ensure they cannot get their hands on the bad habit snacks and candy too readily. If they notice the kind of food around them is healthy fresh fruit and other healthier options, they will become accustomed to it.

Become smoothie buddies. Involving the whole family makes the whole experience much more fun, and much more likely to succeed. Get everyone involved. You can then keep tabs on how each other is doing, and even invent new recipes from time to time.

Enjoy a variety of recipes. For a lot of children, variety is the key to success. Continuously discovering and enjoying new healthy recipes is important in keeping them interested. A recipe collection like "Sensational Smoothies: Drink Your Way To Health Deliciously" is a great way to way to keep them eating healthy.

It is our responsibility to make sure our children grow up to be as healthy as possible. Child obesity is rising constantly and it needs to be stopped. Teaching our kids how to eat healthy is the best way possible for them to become healthy, successful adults. Truth About Sugar - The Paleo Diet

For years, we've heard that if you want to reduce your chances of getting heart disease and other chronic diseases, then you must follow a diet that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol. However, recent studies suggest that we should actually scale back our intake of added sugars in our diet.

Added sugars are those sugars that manufacturers put in to our food during processing to enhance flavour. You can identify those added sugars within an ingredient list - they can come in the form of corn syrup, dextrose, high-fructose corn syrup, fruit juice concentrate, glucose-fructose, honey and sucrose, just to name a few. In fact, high- fructose corn syrup, often under the guise of HFCS, is predominately used as a sweetener of choice because it is so cheap.

What is also interesting about this study is that people with the highest intake of refined sugars actually had higher blood fats and triple the risk of having a low level of good cholesterol (HDL). The more sugar you consume, the higher the bad blood fats in your arteries and the higher the risk of heart disease and other diseases. Excessive sugar in our diets has also been linked to higher calorie intake, higher body weight, higher obesity rates, increased risk of diabetes and a lower intake of vitamins and minerals.

It's estimated that the average Canadian consumes about 16 teaspoons of added sugar per day, which is way too much. Did you know that a can of soda has about 10 teaspoons of sugar? Even beverages with artificial sweeteners or diet drinks are equally dangerous.

In addition to soft drinks and fruit drinks, added sugars are found in baked goods, chocolate bars, breakfast cereals, salad dressings, frozen dinners, peanut butter, pastas, breads - and the list goes on and on.

    So, what to do?

  • Check the ingredient label on the foods that you eat to see how much sugar is contained in each serving. You might be surprised to see how many different types of refined sugars are added to the product.
  •  Replace soft drinks and fruit punch with real fruit juice (you may also want to have the actual fruit instead of the fruit juice), or make homemade smoothies with frozen fruit and low-fat milk. You can even use almond or rice milk as a substitute for milk.
  • Also, choose boxed cereals made from whole grains with less than 8 grams of sugar and 3 or more grams of fiber.
  • Limit sweet treats to once a week and reduce sugar in your recipes.

After doing this for over 18 years, I have found that the majority of individuals struggle with their weight because they consume way too much sugar. Bad fats and excessive portions is often not the culprit. So, if you want to lose weight and stay healthy in 2012, check ingredient labels and scale back your sugar consumption. Furthermore, you may follow healthy sweet recipes like the Paleo Sweets Recipe.
